This dystopian novel by Neal Shusterman is a real winner. Set in the future after a Pro-Life/Pro-Choice war, abortions are illegal. Instead parents have the choice between the ages of 13 and 18 to have their child unwound. Unwinding is a common accepted practice in society where the child’s body parts are taken apart yet kept alive so the child in question is not technically dead. These body parts are given to amputees, and sick patients who need new organs, cells and blood. When Connor Lassiter’s parents fill in the forms to have troublemaker Conner unwound Conner knows his only option is to run. Being 17 he only has to survive a year until his 18th birthday and after that it is illegal to unwind him. Along the way Conner meets Risa and Lev fellow unwinds who are each being unwound for very different reasons, however they have one thing in common the instinct to run.
This is the kind of book that just gets better and better as you carry on reading. The beginning was ok the middle good and the end unputdownable. Chilling and thought provoking I’ll definitely be recommending this book to fans of the dystopian genre. Although this is a young adult novel some parts are seriously creepy so I wouldn’t necessarily recommend this to younger readers. I’ll definitely be checking out some more of Neal Shusterman’s books. 4.5 stars.
